Christchurch Sights and Attractions

Christchurch on New Zealand’s South Island is a city for all seasons. Christchurch weather ranges from frosty in winter; perfect for your Mt Hutt ski trips, to mild in summer.  The nearby Southern Alps are the centre of the region’s winter attractions, including Aoraki Mt Cook, the country’s highest peak and Queenstown, adrenalin-central. Don’t worry though; if snow’s not your thing, Christchurch and the Canterbury region still has plenty to entice you.

One of the most popular ways of getting around the region is with a rental car. Christchurch has plenty of rugged shores to explore and quaint villages like Lyttelton to visit. Lyttelton Harbour is also the place to spot the elusive Herbert’s Dolphin and kick back on a scenic cruise.

A great way to see the sights while experiencing some of Christchurch’s heritage first-hand is to take the tram. This tour of Christchurch does a circuit around the city and gives commentary on sights such as the Cathedral and Christchurch Botanic Garden, New Zealand’s finest. After dark it also becomes a restaurant.

A Christchurch map will also point out a number of other interesting attractions in the city, including the Arts centre and the International Antarctic Centre, where you can get a taste of the Antarctic region first-hand.

You can’t miss a ride on the Christchurch Gondola with its spectacular views of parks and gardens as well as the coast and Southern Alps, or a visit with a real kiwi at Orana Park.

Wherever you go in Christchurch, you will find plenty of action!
